Expert advice on moving to serverless

We asked seven serverless experts, knowing what they know now, what piece of advice would they give to their past selves on moving to serverless. Here’s what they had to say:

Building with serverless technologies is liberating. It enables developers to start at the business logic and continue from prototype through to production. My tip is to start small, choose a new project with a low blast radius, prove the concept, learn the patterns, and iterate.

Serverless is becoming the primary way to build applications for many companies. In 2020, nearly 50% of all workloads within Amazon were Lambda-based, and we see the same adoption patterns across customers of all sizes. There are today hundreds of thousands of customers running trillions of invocations a month using Lambda.

Coming into 2021, Lambda now has 140 native integrations, making it easier for builders to develop new applications quickly. With the new 1ms billing, I think we’ll see even faster growth for high-performance computing and parallelized workloads. And the new container packaging for Lambda function makes it so much easier for organizations with Docker-based workflows to build their serverless apps with familiar tools.

I’m really excited to see what 2021 brings for serverless. Customers are using Lambda to innovate and create in truly surprising new ways. The serverless community is the most vibrant and engaged that I’ve ever seen. And it’s great to welcome all the new developers, many of which will build massive scale apps without ever having to think about servers.

When switching to serverless it’s important to not be overwhelmed by the number of serverless choices available. Keep a focus on the core services which will encompass 80-90% of your company’s usage of serverless and then learn the rest as they come up. As the saying goes, “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time” [Desmond Tutu] so don’t take on too much all at once. Once you have a solid foundation then you can move much faster and in most cases have others on your team leverage that foundation to build alongside you in parallel.

There is a great Serverless community online. Reach out and ask plenty of questions – people who have good knowledge in an area generally love to talk about it, so they are a great resource. Serverless, in particular, is moving very quickly, so connecting with the community and reading their content has helped me to keep up to date and apply it to my work.
